Program philosophy

This outcome-based program aims to produce graduates with competence in applied English language studies who can 1) communicate efficiently in academic and professional contexts, 2) analyze English in academic and professional contexts with understanding of its nature, use and acquisition, as well as having social and intercultural awareness, and 3) can develop research and innovations beneficial for professional practice via practical application of contemporary theories in English language studies, while embracing H.R.H. Prince Mahidol of Songkla's philosophy "Our Soul is for the Benefit of Mankind."

Who is the program for?

The program is open to anyone with an interest in the English language and its use. It is especially intended for those who want to develop the skills needed for work in which special knowledge about English is needed or helpful, irrespective of whether they already have such a job or whether they aim to apply for it in future. The jobs this program is relevant to include:

  • English language teacher (in any kind of education) and teacher trainer
  • Translator or interpreter from/to English
  • Editor, proof-reader or technical writer in English
  • Administrator in an organization or section where English plays a key role (e.g. international relations)
  • Researcher in English

Aims of the program

This program aims to produce graduates with competence in applied English language studies who can:

  1. Communicate efficiently in academic and professional contexts.
  2. Analyze English in academic and professional contexts with understanding of its nature, use and acquisition, as well as having social and intercultural awareness.
  3. Develop research and innovations beneficial for professional practice via practical application of contemporary theories in English language studies.

Expected Learning Outcomes (ELOs)

PLO1  Behave morally and ethically in compliance with academic and professional codes of practice (ประพฤติปฎิบัติตนตามหลักคุณธรรมจริยธรรมและจรรยาบรรณทางวิชาการและการประกอบอาชีพ)                       

PLO2  Analyze English in real-life contexts using related theories for academic and professional purposes (วิเคราะห์ภาษาอังกฤษในบริบทจริงตามหลักทฤษฎีที่เกี่ยวข้อง เพื่อประโยชน์ทางวิชาการและในการประกอบอาชีพได้)    

PLO3  Develop research or language innovation to enhance professional practices using contemporary knowledge in applied English language studies  (พัฒนางานวิจัยหรือนวัตกรรมทางภาษาเพื่อเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพในการประกอบอาชีพที่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษได้โดยประยุกต์ใช้แนวคิดทฤษฎีร่วมสมัยด้านภาษาอังกฤษประยุกต์ศึกษา)

PLO4  Work collaboratively with others in both academic and professional contexts with awareness of individual and cultural differences, flexibility and ability to appropriately adapt to situations (สามารถทำงานร่วมกับผู้อื่นในบริบททางวิชาการและในการประกอบอาชีพที่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษโดยคำนึงถึงความแตกต่างระหว่างบุคคลและวัฒนธรรม มีความยืดหยุ่นและปรับตัวได้อย่างเหมาะสมตามสถานการณ์)

PLO5  Communicate effectively in English in both academic and professional contexts (สื่อสารภาษาอังกฤษเชิงวิชาการและวิชาชีพได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ)

PLO6  Apply digital technology related to English language appropriately and efficiently (ประยุกต์ใช้เทคโนโลยีดิจิทัลเกี่ยวกับภาษาอังกฤษได้อย่างเหมาะสมและมีประสิทธิภาพ)

Qualification of Applicants

To be eligible for admission to this program, an applicant must: 

  • hold a Bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, in English/English language teaching or any related fields. Applicants with Bachelor’s degrees in other areas must have at least one year of work experience in areas where English plays a prominent role.
  • obtain a standardized test score of English proficiency equivalent to CEFR B1, namely IELTS not less than 5.0, or TOEFL ITP not less than 500, or TOEFL iBT not less than 38, or PSU-TEP not less than 75%, or a comparable score from any other accredited English proficiency test. (Except for those with English as a native language and a degree from an English-medium institution)
  • *have authored at least ONE research report OR ONE research paper published in a peer-reviewed journal or in any other journals indexed in ISI/Scopus/TCI, or a peer-reviewed conference proceeding

Remark:   *Required for admission to Plan A1 only. You must successfully complete an interview with the admissions team.

Program structure

The program consists of 36 credits and typically takes 2 years to complete (early completion is possible if all requirements are met sooner). You will take 18 credits in courses in the first year, starting with 12 credits of core courses, which will explore the following kinds of questions:

  • How can we describe the way English is used in real-life communication from the perspective of contemporary theory in English language studies?
  • How can we apply knowledge in English language studies to develop research projects that address real-life issues?

In addition to the core courses, you will be able to choose 6 credits of more specialized elective courses according to your interests. Courses in the following areas are available:

  • Contemporary English linguistics and sociolinguistics
  • English language teaching (theory and practice)
  • Translation and intercultural communication

 After completing the courses in the first year, you will use your knowledge to develop a research topic and spend the second year writing your thesis on this topic with the help of a qualified advisor.

 Fees

  • 27,000 baht / Semester (Thai students)
  • 54,000 baht / Semester (International students)

Required Application Documents

1) A copy of a Bachelor’s Degree certificate in English/English language teaching or any related fields

2) Supervisor letter certifying at least ONE-year work experience (if no English-related degree)

3) ONE recent 1-inch sized ID/passport photo

4) A valid certificate with required minimum scores from ONE of the following English proficiency tests:

IELTS: 5.0 / TOEFL: ITP 500 / TOEFL: iBT 38 / PSU-TEP: 75% (all skills)
